I often find myself specifically lost in Kevin Devine's work. It's a little teen-dreamy, on my nerdy, word-play obsessed end, a little "lost in feeling found," that his lyrics play with constantly, and there's a clear nod to the music and musical culture that I identify with the '90's for sure. When i was in high school and early college, desperately seeking the Michael Penn metaphor while still finding bands that were cool enough to seem more experienced in life than you could possibly be. And silly. and in love. and a little pissed. Taking yourself seriously with a pulse of child-like glee. We can't be Leonard cohen, after all... But we can gather around the campfire with a bunch of cool kids who aren't afraid of nerding out with renditions of the first songs you learned on the guitar, and hope that they were Leonard Cohen. You've got your Pavement, you've got your Lou Barlow, you've got your ass-kicking, searing guitar, and unexpected playfulness and integrity of Jeff Buckley, with a clear consciousness of individual sound. It is a formula that has sadly been lost in the past decade-plus. However, this loss in commercial sound is exactly what Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band and Bad Books(home to this song and a collaboration with Manchester Orchestra members) bring back. They are touted as an indie dream band, or something like that. I'm just glad that they're making music. I love it, and it clearly comes from a place of process.
